Are You An Empath?

Being empathic can result in not only empathizing with someone else but actually feeling another person’s happiness or anger in their own body; so much so that they may not be able to tell the difference between their own feelings and the other person. It can be very overwhelming and confusing.

First, let’s start with the basics….What is the difference between empathy and being empathic.

Are you an Empath?

Empathy has a range of stages that can span between someone who is unable to understand or associate with how others feel (narcissists and sociopaths) and those who “feel” others emotions.

Now if we take what it says in the dictionary the definition is, a person with the paranormal ability to apprehend the mental or emotional state of another individual.

"Empathy is the most precious human quality.” - Dalai Lama

It is only harmful if you allow your empathic abilities to overwhelm you

When an empath does not understand they are taking on others emotions…they can feel others pain, anger, sadness, depression, and other emotions as if it were their own. Eventually, this can lead to problems in their nervous system and mental health. It can keep you from living a happy and healthy life.

Most empaths become overwhelmed by their environment or by being around other people. Often they feel like they do not belong or fit in. Empaths can work to prevent this by learning about why they are different and understand that they possess a psychic ability.

A psychic ability that can be helpful once they learn to use it instead of it using them. There is no reason for there to be a negative connotation just because they can feel other people’s emotions. One great thing about being empathic is it is not only about sensing other people’s emotions but some empaths can sense animals, plants, weather, people’s physical symptoms.

As a child, I did not realize I was a sensitive kid. I did not know that I was feeling things in a different way than other kids or adults around me. I had never heard of the term “being empathic.”

What I didn’t know when I was young caused me years of damage that I still to this day am learning to undo. The best advice I can give is to evaluate if you are empathic so if you are you can start to make some changes in your life.

Are you a sensitive person?

Are you a person who is compassionate, creative, in touch with your feelings, ever been considered a dreamer or idealist? Have you felt emotional burnout, chronic fatigue, or ever feel like you are suffering?

If you are conscious of other people’s feelings and emotions then you may be an empath

Knowing if you are empathic is an important thing to understand about yourself as it can let you know whether you need work on your skills so you do not sacrifice your own emotional health.

Now why would it be important for you to know you are an empath? Because being an empath can be the most beautiful gift when used properly but can be a curse if left unnoticed.

Empaths are some of the most caring and loving people in the world. But if they are sucking up everyone else’s energy in an unhealthy way, it will present itself as anxiety, depression, mood swings, chronic fatigue, anger, fibromyalgia and a whole lot of various health problems.

First, you need to recognize that you are empathic and then learn how to control it. Never wish it away. It is a beautiful gift from the universe and its purpose is to be used for good.

Being empathic….is a super power….. own it.

Just be sure to learn how to protect yourself from people and situations that drain your energy.
